Drawing Residencies

Above are some photos from two self-directed residencies: Museum of Classical Archaeology in Cambridge and V&A in London.

'It's a great joy to sketch within the hallowed walls of the V and A. It's not as quiet as these photos suggest; lovely people from all over the world spoke to me as I drew. I first started drawing in earnest as scientist. In many ways sketching in a museum is a similar experience to sketching in a laboratory, the subject specimen is usually placed on minimalist background and well-lit. What my eye sees is very different - it's like wearing two different sets of glasses. Here I studied Aimé-Jules Dalou's 'Peasant woman nursing a baby'(1873), because of the dignified way the woman and child were captured.'


The work from the V&A appeared in a group exhibition in 2023: The Digwell Arts Trust, The Forge, Digswell, Hertfordshire, UK.
